The University has just selected this year’s Syracuse Scholars — the highest academic accolade given to graduating seniors. They will lead the student processional at Commencement. This is a mark of tremendous accomplishment, and nine of the twelve students named are Honors students:

HopePrint is a local Syracuse organization dedicated to helping local resettled refugees find a healthy place in the Syracuse community. They need some help with communications, media (both online, video and print) as well as some basic IT and networking help. These are offered in the form of internships. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your media skills while making a great impact. Added bonus: It will count towards your Civic Engagement requirement.

What: Closing Reception and Video Presentation for Price Check, a Curatorial Research Project

Where: Red House Arts Center (in the Cafe, Theater, and Gallery), 201 S. West St. in Syracuse, NY

“Price Check” is an interactive curatorial exhibition and research project organized by Courtney Rile and Roslyn Esperon that examines the variations of the visual art market based upon geographic proximity to a major art center. The research focused on the state of New York where the art market ranges vastly from the urban art hub of New York City to the neighboring art town of Beacon, and more distantly, to the post-industrial city of Syracuse. The exhibition debuted at Delavan Art Gallery in 2009 before traveling to Floor One Gallery in Beacon, NY and LaunchPad in Brooklyn, NY. The exhibition features works by artists from each of these three locations, including: Michael Barletta, Carol Flaitz, Carla Goldberg, Novado Cappuccilli, Jason Varone, Fred Wellner, and Laura Wellner.

Deanna Payson, senior Honors student, has been busy for the last year coordinating the first-ever “Life Gets Better Together” conference for LGBT youth advocacy. It will take place on March 24th in the Newhouse school, and will feature a day of workshops, a keynote panel, and an a cappella concert to benefit The Trevor Project. There are a wealth of interesting educational workshops, and the keynote panel on representations of LGBTQ youth in politics & the media will feature two high-profile outside speakers (media relations expert Cathy Renna and NYS Assembly Member Daniel O’Donnell) in addition to Dr. Brenda Wrigley of the PR department in Newhouse.

Honors Alum Sarah Wendell ’11 is being featured in Arts & Sciences news for landing a job in an NIH laboratory working on HIV research. Sarah is the recipient of an NIH Post-Baccalaureate Intramural Training Award. She won this award by working with the faculty and advisors of the Nationally Competitive Scholarship Committee (NCSC).
