Play Matters! Looking at IST 400 “Gamification Journey”

playDo you miss your childhood? Well you may have seen the  new ‘IST 400: Gamification Journey‘ course we are offering. Some of the most rewarding courses we’ve offered here in Honors focus on the idea of play, games, and the purposes for them.  Professor Scott Nicholson at the iSchool is a game designer, and not only does he design board (and other) games, but he focuses on “transformative gaming”… that is, using the concepts of “gamification” to transform people, communities, and other civic spaces.

If you like to play (and who doesn’t), consider checking out these two short videos that will give you a peek into this course. First, Professor Nicholson takes you through what you’re going to be doing in the course. Hint: NOT techie or programming stuff!

And second, this fantastic TED talk will add 7.5 minutes to your life. Curious? Good! Please click!

Check out Scott’s blog for more information on just what “gamification” is about: http://becauseplaymatters.com

Capstones in December

December graduates and seniors who will be off campus in the spring are polishing up and turning in their Capstones. Robert Murray from the Sports Management program turned in his Capstone entitled “A Geographical Analysis of the Origin of National Football League Players and Draftees” yesterday. Congratulations to Robert and all our December Capstone finalists.

And come hear their Capstone presentations next Thursday, 12/12 in the Honors Suite beginning at 10am.Robert Murray photo

Live from the Lounge: Our very first pilot episode

Hi Honors Community!

We’d like to introduce you to a new feature here at the Honors blog! We are calling it “Live from the Lounge” and we dreamed this up because we think that Honors students are amazing, and whenever we engage with you guys we come away either learning something new, or being really impressed. We also think this is a great way for you to get to know your fellow Honors students. Every one of you has something you care about, something that’s on your mind. We’ll be producing one of these every so often, so be on the lookout for Karen Hall in the Honors lounge with her iPad. She just might tap you to be our next “Live from the Lounge” subject!

Lastly, a HUGE thank you to Kathryn Ferentchak, who shares her thoughts on Juice magazine, Photography, and even wishes you a happy winter season, in which no particular holiday may or may not occur.
