Welcome back, and happy new year! We are excited to announce a new program in partnership with the University Lectures – the Honors “Backstage Pass” program. Backstage Pass is your chance to participate in small group conversations with the exciting and nationally renowned artists, scholars, writers, and leaders that Syracuse University brings to campus each year. In the past, Honors students have had dessert and lemonade with environmental activist Bill McKibben and lunch with playwright Tony Kushner.

Hey Juniors, Be a Class Marshall

Senior Class Marshals are our most committed and thoughtful students.  They serve as the all-university student representatives for graduation.  Marshals also have the unique opportunity to participate in the following experiences:

  • Meeting with senior-level University administrators to share and offer feedback on the SU experience
  • Engaging in exclusive networking opportunities with alumni and trustees
  • Representing the 2015 class at special University–wide events
  • Helping to select the 2015 Commencement speaker
  • Leading the entire Commencement procession at graduation.

Marshals are distinguished individuals who have excelled during their time at Syracuse, exemplified the spirit of the senior class, understood and experienced Scholarship in Action, and exhibited excellent critical-thinking skills.  The criteria used to determine qualified nominees include: scholarship, academic honors, student organization involvement, campus and community service, and an essay soliciting the student’s suggestions for engaging the SU community in Scholarship in Action.  An online application form, the above-mentioned essay, nominations/recommendations from two SU faculty or staff, and a copy of an official Syracuse University transcript are required.

Applicants MUST be current juniors who will graduate in May of 2015.  Application materials are available online at http://seniormarshal.syr.edu.  The student’s application (and faculty or staff nominations), along with essays and transcripts, must be submitted online by Friday, January 31, 2014.

Honors Students in HNR 240 Publish “Harvest of the Month” Recipe Book

Wilson ParkOn Friday, November 15th, honors students in Professor Parker’s HNR 240 Food Stories class traveled to Wilson Park, an after school program in downtown Syracuse, to implement a “Harvest of the Month” program.  With their program, group members Ella D’Amico, Jessie Gwilt, Sydney Karp, Luis Loor, and Ashlee Newman hoped to help fill the nutritional education gap for these children by educating the Central New York youth on the importance of eating seasonally and locally. They also provided participants with a yearly food guide.

The booklet highlights a fruit or vegetable for each month, along with nutritional information and a healthy, kid-friendly recipe for each food. During their trip to Wilson Park, the group presented their booklet and demonstrated the November recipe – a Greek yogurt dip mixed with cinnamon and honey with sliced apples. The program was a huge success and Wilson Park is hoping to continue the Harvest of the Month program in the future!

Have you ever attended the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration SU holds in the Dome? Each year Honors hosts a table at this inspiring and heart warming event.

If you would like to be our guest, please fill out the form below. The first seven students to do so will receive a ticket for the event. If you respond after the seats are spoken for, we will keep a wait list and contact you should someone be unable to attend.

Doors open at 4 p.m.

Dinner served at 4:30 p.m.

Capstones in December

December graduates and seniors who will be off campus in the spring are polishing up and turning in their Capstones. Robert Murray from the Sports Management program turned in his Capstone entitled “A Geographical Analysis of the Origin of National Football League Players and Draftees” yesterday. Congratulations to Robert and all our December Capstone finalists.
