Honors Students Engage Community

Wondering why Honors courses are so different from others?
On Saturday, October 26 Honors students enrolled in Professor Faye McMahon’s, “Folk Arts, Festival and Public Display” engaged with community members from DR Congo at Refugee Resettlement Services in Syracuse. Makene, Kiza and Tamone introduced students through their storytelling to their unique traditional arts. After the two hour program, the students enjoyed a traditional Somali meal at the nearby African International Restaurant, a popular community gathering place frequented by new immigrants to Syracuse from East Africa.
Below are some wonderful photos of the class’s outing!

We heard you!

In our recent survey, many of you gave us useful feedback regarding our course offerings.  So… our Spring 2014 course lineup includes many continuing favorites and much that is new!

 Here’s some highlights:

  •  Two new Honors courses from IST
  • A new science offering (HNR 250 Darwin & Evolutionary Theory),
  • A new Psychology elective (PSY 392)
  • A new interdisciplinary HNR 340/360 course (Aesthetics across Cultures)
  • Two new writing workshops (a literary journalism workshop, MAG 400 and HNR 340 Critical Writing in a Wired Culture)
  • A new HNR social science (HNR 360 Body Art and Modification)
  • A few  new one-credit seminars:  HNR 230 Lying With Statistics, HNR 220 Strategies for Scholar Development, and HNR 210 SYSTEM CITY: Unpacking, Hacking, and Re-stacking the Urban Condition.
  • For the first time, we’re also offering both levels of Honors physics in the spring:  PHY 215 and PHY 216.  Hello Engineers!

You’ll also be glad to hear that the two IST 400/Honors courses and the MAG 400/Honors course all count as HNR prefix in your Honors requirements.

  • We’re also rolling out a new format for our course listings! We still will have our PDFs for those of you who like to browse, or print.  Now you will notice that below the PDF links there is a big list of all the courses.  Just click into a course’s title for a complete description.  You can then email, share, or bookmark, classes you are interested in for when you register.  Please remember: this list is in “beta”, so it’s pretty basic right now. In the future, we’ll work on adding some search tools and different views to make finding courses easier!

Learning Communities Go to the Corning Museum of Glass!

The Resident Advisors in our Honors Learning Communities never cease to amaze us with the activities they come up with! Last week, RAs on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Sadler Hall, Jackie Barr and Bo Stewart, organized a trip for their residents to go to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY. The Museum is a highlight of the Central New York region and contains a collection of more than 45,000 glass objects which span 3,500 years of glassmaking history! Corning is dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of the art, history and science of glass and we love that our Honors Learning Communities were able to experience it.
When asked what brought about the trip, Sadler 3 RA Bo Stewart said, “My inspiration for the trip just came from my philosophy that students should take advantage of the attractions in the Central New York/Finger Lakes region while they are attending SU. Visiting places like the Corning Museum of Glass are both fun experiences and opportunities to expand our understanding of the history and culture of the region.”
We are happy to see our Honors students engaging with the history and cultures of the CNY region!

Learning Community Outing

With Oscar Nominations having just been announced, the timing seemed right to share with you one of the wonderful outings that our learning communities on Sadler 2 and 3 made at the end of the fall term. Last month, the two LCs collaborated and had a wonderful night out; sharing a meal together discussing the impact of President Lincoln on American history and the prevalence of racism in modern day and then going to see the the movie “Lincoln.” This is one of the many activities we hear about from our learning communities and most certainly something that makes us happy here at the Honors Program. Oh! And this just in: “Lincoln” is leading the way to the 2013 Oscars. The bio pic about the 16th president picked up 12 Academy Award nominations, including best director for Steven Spielberg and best actor for Daniel Day-Lewis! Great choice Sadler 2 and 3!7
